I recently got a comment on one of my pics, that the DA watermark spoilt the image...

My reply was that since I have been using the watermark, my images haven't been stolen, so in this regard, it is a good thing.  The person replied...


"The 99% of the great photographers and digital artists in DeviantArt, NEVER use this "ugly" watermark!
Do you think that they don't know that the people are using their works for a different purposes without their permission?

I really don't understand people that they share their works in places like DA and put watermarks on it, what they are trying to say? I guess that with this action they say: "I am great, the best, but you CAN'T have my work! I will keep it in my computer and no one will enjoy it ever!".

I wonder why this kind of people bother to "share" their works???

Whilst I don't mind sharing my work to those who enjoy it, what goes against the grain is people stealing my work, putting it up on their own websites FOR SALE, and I don't get a mention, or see any of the profit.  For that reason and that reason alone, I use the DA watermark and haven't had a problem since.  I can't count how many times I ended up seeing my work elsewhere like this.

So - do I or don't I use the DA watermark?  I do not want to put my own watermark over the image in photoshop, because then I need to separate my images to uploadable images vs non uploadable, as I enter my images in competitions here in New Zealand where I don't want the watermark on.  This is why I find the DA watermark so convenient.  I use watermarks in Redbubble as well, and never do people ever mention it there.

What do you all think?

I'm still around, but not that active on Deviantart any more, simply because of time.  

I sold my house, had a new one built, moved down to the South Island, and have since then been keeping pretty busy, firstly settling in, and doing landscaping, and secondly meeting new people and joining in lots of activities.

However, I am keeping my blog up to date with photos and with what I've been up to, so if you're interested, you can look at it at www.robyncarter.blogspot.com&n… free to leave comments on there, and I'll answer them.

I did upgrade to the Canon 7D at the beginning of the year, after using the 20D for 4 years.  I'm very pleased with the quality, but it has already gone into servicing because of a noise problem.  I'm waiting to see if it's improved, however, I've just recently had a ligament reattachment and have only just got out of plaster.  So no climbing mountains or molehills for me just yet with my camera.

Have just uploaded a few images today of the vineyards surrounding my property in Autumn.  The South Island of New Zealand is a photographers paradise, and I have no regrets from moving from the Big Smoke in Auckland down here.

I'll try and upload more later..
